Flashback time…

I would have never seen this movie had I not deliberately sought out movies that had Alex in them and what a gem I would have missed. What was your favorite part of The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant?

Found a fun article on Zap 2 It about Odette Yustman, who got to kiss Alex in a brief scene for the movie The Holiday. I am sure you all remember it! According to the article it was not very brief to film…

“I ended up having to kiss this guy for hours! It was a tricky shot because you had to get the angle right, so it was very specific; I’d say we were there for a good eight hours, at least. We were troupers, though. I was in good company, and it was just a fun little thing. It’s one of those things you do when you’re just starting out.”

Another new clip… this one takes place amongst the cheese…

I found it very ironic a couple weeks ago when a company I have promoted in my “day job” announced that they were holding a contest to screen The Back-up Plan. It really is a small world! The company is Kid Basix and they are the designers of the Safe Sippy, a stainless steel, BPA free sippy cup that we use in our home and which I promote on another blog of mine.

The Safe Sippy makes an appearance throughout The Back-up Plan so this company, in conjunction with CBS films, is holding this unique contest. Imko and the crew over at OnlineJlofan.com just posted an interview they did with the director of The Back-up Plan, Alan Poul! In it he gives us some insight into what he was looking for when he set out to cast Stan and why he chose Alex. Here are a couple gems form the interview:

While watching Lopez’s movies in preparation for the film, Poul noticed Lopez’s “enormously charismatic screen presence”. He quickly realized that finding the perfect Stan would be difficult. “I realized when she’s on screen, it’s impossible not to watch her. So, finding a guy who could hold his own with her [and] also who could be Stan was difficult. A lot of the younger actors who you might believe as a cheese farmer, I felt, would come off as being too weak or too soft and wouldn’t be able to balance the story.” In addition, when looking into a pool of “bigger” names who would possibly make a better match for Lopez, Poul felt that they were “definitely too old to play Stan.”

Yes, yes… he needed fresh, young (but not like “Twilight” young), and able to stand next to JLo and not look like a wall flower…

Casting a relatively unknown actor head-to-head with Lopez  was the direct result of what Poul describes as O’Loughlin’s own “brand of masculinity” which he perceived as “strong, effortless, not aggressive, but it’s so masculine that he would never appear to be soft or weak.”

These qualities needed to be present in the actor in order to bring balance to the two leads. In the film, Zoe is in complete control of her life and her future. As her counterpart, Stan could not appear to be a wimp, even during the ‘freak-out’ moments he experiences in the film. Poul recognized this characteristic in O’Loughlin immediately, and Stan was cast.

Yep, yep.. certainly no wimp. Strong and effortless are two words that definitely characterize Alex O’Loughlin.

In case you missed it, I wanted to spread the link love for OnlineJLofan and their coverage of The Back-up Plan press conference. Erika, aka BellaJLo, had the opportunity to represent Beyond-Beautiful.com and OnlineJLoFan.com and it is a good read. As Jlo fan sites they concentrated on JLo and her role in this movie but they have a blurb from Alex there as well. In reference to his chemistry with Jennifer he said:

“We met before we did the film together. We had a meeting, had a cup of tea at her house in Long Island. Met with her family and, I mean, we realized that we were both cool people and we [got each other’s] sense of humor. We made sure to see if we could spend a bunch of time together and not, like, kill each other,” says O’Loughlin. “The thing is,” he continues, “to have a friend and a comrade as your co-star, especially in a film, in a romantic comedy, is really important. It gives you the room…it’s easy to give yourself and the other [person] permission to play. I actually learned a lot about comedy and romantic comedies from Jennifer.”
