Hawaii Five-0 aired one final time for the season with a new episode and it was sure full of lots of excitement and action. McGarrett took it to a whole new level of craziness even for him.. Here is the recap from Susan to share just how much and how the finale left us all hanging.
As our episode begins we see a room full of girls sleeping. We also notice that all of the girls have a large letter E tattooed on their back shoulders. At almost 6:00 AM, a man comes in and wakes them abruptly screaming to get up now and move. They are herded outside to the trailer of an eighteen wheeler and taken off. Cue the wave and the music.
On return, we see Danny showing Charlie where he works at HQ. Danny points out everyone’s office and explains that Uncle Steve’s office is way off in the corner, not because he’s the boss, but because he is in permanent time out. (typical Danny for you). Once settled inside Danny’s office, Uncle Steve enters who proceeds to sit on the floor and play with Charlie. Charlie announces he is hungry. Danny wants to know why Steve isn’t at the doctor’s appointment he had and Steve informs him he’s already been and the liver is fine. During this time there is some beloved banter on how unhealthy the vending machines are since Steve wants to take Charlie there. At this point , Steve asks Charlie why his Danno has to be a poopie head sometimes.
Next we are with Chin and Abby at their home who are acting as if they haven’t seen each other in a long while. They are of course taking advantage of their time alone as Auntie Kono has taken Sara shopping for food and party items to celebrate Jerry getting his badge. While there, Kono picks up one last item on her list and to our surprise it’s a pregnancy test. (Who else saw this coming?) While there, Kono gets a call from Moani at Pearl Haven.
Next we see Kono visiting Moani. Moani called Kono to ask if Emilio has told Five-0 anything. Moani tells Kono that he will never tell them anything and that Emilio is more afraid of the people he works for than he is of Five-0. Kono assures Moani that they will continue to follow all leads. Moani gives Kono a sketch of a man she made. She tells Kono that his name is Deon and that he is the one that moved them all around in the big truck and that she wants to help Five-0 catch him and the others.
Back at HQ, we see Steve in Danny’s office with a box where he tells him it is a gift and to open it. Of course Danny is curious as to what it is and rather than open it he goes through reasons for Steve to give him the gift, including Mother’s Day, which understandably, Steve finds to be crazy. The banter is once again interrupted by Kono.
Back out at the table, the team has gotten information on Moani’s sketch. They pull up a photo of Deon Miller. He was on record for assault two years ago but the charges were dropped. Jerry tells them he has a class A commercial driver’s license and owns a private independent trucking company. The team has also located the house he is staying at and is sure he has the girls there. Steve has Kono notify HPD to meet them there.
As the team arrives at the home they systematically go through the home but find it empty. It is eerily like the home they had raided before with the previous girls when they found Moani. Kono finds a doll in the room they were kept in and this clearly affects her, more deeply than we know. It is also clear that the team has just missed finding the girls there as there is a timed coffee pot that comes on. Lou raises a good point with Steve on how did they know they were even coming.
Next on the road, Lou is trying to ease the hurt that Kono is feeling. Kono admits that she can’t imagine being a parent. Lou tells her that even as they grow it’s hard to let them go and tells Kono he is concerned about Samantha going to college in Chicago this upcoming semester.
Meanwhile over in the car with Steve and Danny, Jerry calls Steve and informs him that he has a lock on the truck. Steve has Jerry call HPD to get a chopper in the air with thermal imaging. The pilot in the air has a visual and confirms to Steve that there is one in the cab and eleven in the trailer. Steve has the pilot monitor Deon’s phone to see if he talks to anyone. Steve also has HPD set up road blocks so that no one approaches Deon’s route. Abby and Duke are with HPD waiting. As Deon approaches, Abby steps out in front showing her badge but this only makes Deon accelerate the truck. Abby isn’t moving, Deon isn’t stopping, and for a moment we are in a game of chicken. Duke is also yelling at Abby to get out of there as he sees the truck is not going to stop. At the last possible second, Abby dives out of the way while Deon crashes through all the HPD cruisers breaking the roadblock in an explosive way.
Our next scene is of Chin pulling up and asking if Abby is alright as she is being patched up by medics.
Back with Steve and Danny who are in hot pursuit, we get the infamous cargument. It consists of Steve telling Danny he knows he is still in love with Rachel and he knows Danny is secretly happy about the divorce but doesn’t want to admit it. Danny says the two are just talking at night and nothing more. He says nothing about the other accusation.
This is interrupted with a call from Jerry with the phone number to Deon’s phone. Steve calls and asks him to pull over. After a few choice words, Deon says he will drive the truck over a cliff before he pulls over. Of course, Danny thinks Steve handled the whole thing wrong. (Danny is consistent, got to give him that) Jerry calls back with all bad news. Deon has fuel tanks big enough to circle the island for days and spike strips could cause the truck to go out of control endangering the girls. Steve then tells the team to head back to the palace because he has a new plan. Danny seems nervous when he hears those words, as he should.
Now back at HQ, everyone is at the table where after hearing Steve’s plan they all think he has finally lost his mind. Steve grabs Charlie’s toy cars and explains that they will force Deon to take a route that goes through a tunnel where Steve will jump from the top of the tunnel on to the top of the truck with Jerry’s help at the table. Once inside the trailer, Chin, Abby and Kono will be on top of a transfer truck which Danny will be driving and at equal speeds will transfer the girls from the trailer to their truck. With no one offering a better solution it’s a done deal although they still all think he is crazy.
Back in Steve’s office, Steve is gearing up for the job when Danny comes in to try to change his mind just in time to see Steve taking pills. He wants to know why he’s still taking them as he thought the doctor took him off of them already. Steve of course blows it off.
Now on the road, with the plan in place, Steve is atop the tunnel waiting to get Jerry’s ok for the jump. It is clear that he also has some question of success in his mind as he looks down at the speeding cars and takes in some deep breaths. With a few minutes to go Steve tells Danny what the gift is that he got him. It is a chef’s hat, for the restaurant Danny’s going to open, which of course will be named Steve’s.
This all makes Danny very worried about Steve as to why he’s telling him this now. But it has to wait as the truck is approaching and Steve must jump. On Jerry’s count, Steve jumps and makes it to everyone’s relief.
Once on top Steve begins to cut the top with a portable blow torch. Not realizing there is also one of the men in there with the girls who begins to shoot at the top where Steve is cutting. Barely jumping back from the gunfire Steve falls over the side of the truck hanging on. Managing to climb back up, he jumps through the top he had cut and the fight is on. It is another good one, and just when the team thinks they have lost communication with Steve, the back opens up and he throws the guy out onto the highway.
With that Danny drives the transfer truck up to the back of the trailer where they proceed to take the girls out. It is working but the chopper pilot informs the team they are approaching a military base and that Deon’s phone will no longer be blocked from seeing what they are doing to rescue the girls. When Deon’s phone clears he does see it and speeds up causing the first attempt at the rescue to be over with five girls and Steve remaining in the back of the truck. The team has no option but to back off as Steve closes the back door of the truck.
Steve who is now on his own with the remaining girls tells them it is ok and promises them they will be fine and to stay in the corner with their heads down. Danny asks Steve what his next horrible plan is to which he tells him he’s going to unhook the trailer from the cab. Danny tells him he wishes he had the toy truck to show him how bad of an idea this is as when he unhitches it, the cab will lose control and crash with the girls in it. Once again with no better idea and knowing he has to act now, he proceeds with the plan. Before doing so however, Danny tells Steve thank you for the hat.
Steve gets to the back of the cab of the truck and gets under the truck to uncouple the trailer from the cab. With the two now separated, the trailer is now grinding down the road to a stop. Deon realizes this, stops the truck, and gets out going back to the trailer with a weapon not realizing that Steve is on the back of the cab. Once he passes Steve, Steve orders him to drop the gun but he turns to shoot (big mistake) and Steve takes him out.
Steve gets to the girls and makes sure they are alright just as Danny and the team catch up to them. Clearly Steve has made Danny a nervous wreck during all of this because he has softened a bit on his usual objections on things. Steve says Danny has hurt his feelings before and with some loving banter and an apology, they walk off arm and arm.
Back at HQ, Jerry has more information on the trafficking operation. Deon had a plane waiting at the airport to have the girls taken to Carson City, Nevada. From there they were to be distributed to various other states and cities. Steve has reached out to the local police departments to advise them what was going on and their efforts to stop the operation.
Kono is not satisfied with simply notifying the police and although they saved ten girls it just doesn’t seem to be enough. Steve tries to reassure her that they all are doing the best they can but have to hope the other department they have notified will pick up and continue with the rescues.
That night at Steve’s house, Jerry’s party is going on and everyone is having a good time. Danny takes Charlie to the bathroom as Steve is coming out. It is at this point that Steve doesn’t look too well and Danny notices it. Danny asks him what is wrong and Steve tells him that the tests from the doctor’s visit showed some radiation poisoning. The pills he is taking should work but there will be some side effects down the road. I don’t think we’ve seen Danny this worried since Steve was shot and needed the transplant. Steve tries to reassure him, says he loves him brother, and walks off to join the party.
Meanwhile, Chin calls Kono to see where she is and if she is coming to the party. It goes to voicemail and as Chin leaves a message we see Kono on a plane headed to Nevada.
And that’s the finale. It was full of the usual Five-0 we all love including some great action and comedy between Steve and Danny. The cliffhangers that we were left with were is Kono pregnant and will she return from Nevada? Is Steve going to beat this radiation thing? Will Chin take the job in San Francisco? Will Danny and Rachel get back together? At this point I’m not as confident as I usually am that they will all be back.. As for the rating for this one, I rate it a 9.
It will be a long Summer for all Five-0 fans as we await some of the answers to the cliffhangers when season 8 begins sometime in September. This episode was really good and a great way to end a stellar season. Kudos to the writers, Alex, the rest of the cast, crew, and all involved that brought us a memorable season.
At this time we would also like to send our deepest sincerest gratitude to Susan who has been faithful all season providing the recaps. Through her extreme detail and light humor, this post has become a favorite among the followers, so once again THANK YOU SUSAN!
