It was Five-0 night again and one of the last two of the season so it had to be good, right? It was. In episode 7.24 Steve has to go off a tip that he receives from a terrorist that he had not seen in 10 years. Susan caps the episode below so find out what happens and whether his intel was good or he got played.
As our episode begins we are at camp base Delta Guantanamo Naval Base, Cuba. We see Steve walking in with military escorts to a cell where a prisoner there has asked to have him come over to see him.
As Steve walks to the cell he flashbacks to the first time he met this man. In the flashback they are in an interrogation cell and Steve is still in the service. His job is to get information from this man who is a terrorist and his enemy. Out of a bag Steve pulls out a carpet for prayer and un-cuffs him. He then tells him he has ten minutes. Although he is confused by Steve’s actions he takes the time Steve has given him and he gets on the “holy” carpet and prays to Mecca.
Coming back to the present, Steve enters the cell and sees the man he remembered from so long ago standing before him. The man’s name is Salaam and Steve tells him he’s traveled a long way to hear what he has to say so what was so urgent that he would only tell Steve face to face. He tells Steve he remembers he has family on Oahu and that he needs to get them off of the island immediately. And the intro rolls.
After the wave, the scene is Chin in the Wailana Coffee House waiting for Coughlin. When he arrives after some idle chatter, he tells Chin that they are in need of serious help in San Francisco with the crime gangs. He wants to create a task force like Five-0 and wants Chin to head it up and run it. Coughlin, of course, tells Chin that he would have to move to San Francisco. Chin is more than just surprised at this and reminds Coughlin that a few years ago he was the one who sent Abby in to shut down Five-0. It seems Coughlin has seen the light and changed his mind about the success of Five-0 and he wants to model the one in San Francisco after it. He reminds Chin that it is where Abby is from, and if he wants, Abby can be his first hire. He proceeds to tell him that it is a great place to raise a child. Chin tells him he will have to think about it and that Hawaii is his home. Coughlin understands and tells him to mull it over.
Next we are taken to Kamekona’s truck where we see our old friend Hirsch who has asked Kono to meet him there. To Hirsch’s disappointment (and to our liking) Kono has brought Adam with her. Ultimately Hirsch wants a favor from Kono. It seems his crime scene clean up business is doing great and he wants to expand but the banks won’t approve him for a loan because of his criminal record. He wants Kono to expunge his criminal record from the system to which she absolutely gives him a hard NO. She also reminds him that what he is asking is illegal.
During this time, Adam was looking at his business plan presentation and offers to fix it, as Adam did run a multi-million dollar business after all. After some half- hearted objections, Hirsch agrees that Adam should look it over for help. During their meeting, Kono gets a call and she has to leave for a case. Before leaving, Kono gives Adam a prolonged kiss good- bye which is probably to remind Hirsch that once again, she’s not interested. Hirsh’s desirous expression is rather comical.
Now at HQ, the team is gathered around the table where Steve has just informed them about the warning he received from Salaam. He says that he was told that there is going to be an attack on Oahu. They all have concerns with believing Salaam because he was a terrorist from Al Qaeda who Steve hadn’t seen for ten years. Steve tells them that he was part of the SEAL team who captured Salaam. Steve says he was the only person who ever got any useful information out of him because he treated him with dignity and kindness. He believes Salaam is repaying that kindness with the warning of a terrorist attack on Oahu because of his family and friends being in harm’s way. Salaam’s information came from another prisoner about the attack and the only words he could offer Steve were Kane Allah. They know Allah means God but have no idea what Kane means.
Now once again in a flashback, we see Steve enter the interrogation cell of Salaam. Steve has brought him food. Both men sit on the floor while Salaam eats. Interrupting him from his thoughts, Jerry comes into Steve’s office to tell him that he was not getting anywhere on the phrase Kane Allah as he can’t find it in Arabic. So now Jerry thinks it’s something way off of a Hawaiian word, Ala meaning the way of the sky. He then had to figure out the purpose of Kane and so Jerry found that there is a travel agency with a similar name.
We next see Lou and Kono at the travel agency that Jerry found. They inform the agent they want the business records and travel records for the last six months. Since the agent is not providing much Aloha after he finds out they are cops, he is also not very cooperative. This suspicious behavior warrants Lou to ask what is behind the locked office door with the security camera.
We then see the owner who is behind that door stuffing money and ledgers into a bag for a quick escape out the back door. All which fails when Lou punches the guy out when he opens the door.
Next we see HPD cuffing the two as Steve arrives. Lou tells him he was right about the agency being crooked but that the place was a front for moving money not people. He shows Steve the ledger which has hundreds of names of brokers transferring money to people in the Middle East with the same amount paid to them here. Kono is on it though, as she has already sent the names to Chin to cross check against the terrorist list before Steve had to ask.
Back at Kamekona’s Adam is doing a great job on Hirsch’s presentation even though Hirsch is being a huge pain. To Adam’s amusement Hirsch even compares himself to Adam’s equal in the Kono department. Putting that aside, Adam tells Hirsch he should play up the having had a record point and tell the banks that he is now successful and expanding. He also says to point out that his best customers are Five-0 who are the ones that arrested him in the first place so if they have that kind of confidence in him why shouldn’t a bank. Hirsch loves the idea and begins to warm up to Adam thanking him for his help.
Next, Steve and Grover are in the truck on the phone with Chin informing them that out of all the names in the ledger, one jumps out at him, Adnan Khalid. He is a professor at Oahu State. He seems to be the perfect citizen except he has received several transfers in the last few weeks totaling well over a hundred thousand dollars. Chin gives them his address and Steve tells Chin to have Kono meet them there.
They soon arrive and bust into the house where all is clear but there is a video message from Khalid on a laptop. It says the actions soon to be taken on Oahu were in response for what they consider to be a slaughter against their people and that this was just the beginning. Since they found the message before the attack, Steve has Kono check the laptop to see when it was set to play. The time was for 6:20 PM which gives the team three hours to figure out what the target is and to stop it.
The next scene is of another flashback of Steve coming out of Salaam’s cell with the empty tray of food Steve had brought him. Steve was met by a superior who is furious that he had given Salaam food and reminds him that his job was to obtain information not to feed him. The confrontation continues with Steve standing up to the man and telling him that until he takes him off of the job, he should let him do what he is doing to break him as nothing else has worked. In what we would consider to be a funny moment, the superior refers to Steve as someone who does not take orders well and has to do things his own way. (YEP that’s about right)
Once again snapped back to the present, Lou tells Steve that after checking with the neighbors and the University no one has seen Khalid in months. It seems he is on a sabbatical and according to travel records he has been going back and forth to Turkey. Steve now thinks this operation is military.
Steve’s phone then rings as Chin tells Steve that Khalid bought a burner phone three days ago. Chin gets a fix on it and Steve and Lou are on their way. It seems as if Khalid is at a mosque.
Steve and Lou arrive in time to see service letting out so Chin calls the phone and they have Khalid in sight. Once Khalid sees Steve and Lou he runs and the chase is on. They lose him just in time to see him speed off on a motorcycle. He hits a car and is thrown into the path of a truck and is run over. Steve and Lou get to him and they see this is not the man that they know as Khalid so who is he?
Now back at HQ, Steve is going over the message on the laptop. As he replays it something does not seem right about it to him. Steve goes to Jerry and asks if anything on Khalid’s computer seems off to him. Jerry says yes that Eric called and said they think his computer may have been hacked. They think all the websites with places he visited were made to look like he had logged on to them when he actually had not. Jerry now thinks Khalid is being set up.
Lou is very skeptical but Steve agrees with Jerry telling Lou and Jerry that in the video of Khalid the signs of forced messages are all there. Steve says he’s seen it before with POWS so he thinks that video was made against Khalid’s will and that he is being held captive in order for them to set him up as the terrorist.
Back upstairs at the table, they can’t find any ID on the guy at the mosque so they think he is being ghosted for the terrorist group. Chin comes in with pictures taken on the phone and it is of a downtown office building. With the attack less than thirty minutes away, Steve says this is their only lead so they head to building. On the way Chin tells them that the building has been empty for a while so now it is even more confusing but Steve still feels it is the right move.
It turns out he was right as Lou sees a plane fly over the building which is right in the airport’s flight path for landing. Steve has Chin check planes arriving at 6:20 and finds one landing at 6:22. It has the body of a Marine killed in combat last week in a raid in Afghanistan. It is the same raid that Khalid was mentioning on the laptop video. They also learn that there are a large number of other Marines from that same unit on the plane as well. It now all makes sense so they rush to the building as time is running out.
Next on top of the building, we see Khalid tied up and gagged with one of the real terrorists preparing a missile launcher. Steve, Lou, and Kono arrive at the building and proceed to make their way to the top.
Once near the top they are met with gunfire from the men guarding the roof entrance. Lou and Kono hold them off while Steve gets to an office just below the roof. He throws a chair out of the window and proceeds to climb out using the crevices on the building to hold on to and make his way up. With a few nail biting moments and almost falling, he reaches the top.
Steve sees the terrorist just about to pull the trigger as the plane is directly over the building and charges him with only seconds before pulling the trigger. The fight of the night is on. We get to see some of Steve’s best moves as he holds off the terrorist. When it looked like he was down Steve pulls a knife and stabs him in the inner thigh giving Steve time to grab the missile launcher and literally blow the guy away. He literally obliterated him leaving nothing. It was one of the better special effects of the season.
Steve then goes to Khalid who says he didn’t do those things he is being accused of and Steve assures him they know that. Lou and Kono had made it there by then and all was good. The plane and men were safe, and so was Steve.
Our next scene is of Steve and Chin pulling up to Kamekona’s that night. Chin tells Steve about Coughlin’s offer. Steve tells Chin that Coughlin had come to him first to let him know he was going to offer the job to Chin. Steve asks Chin if he accepted. Chin tells Steve that he said he would have to think about it and that Hawaii was his home. At this point we get our first heads up on the fact that Chin is going to ask Abby to marry him but he is just not sure when. Chin also says he is not sure if she will even say yes but he is going to try. Steve assures him that she will not say yes as she is an independent woman but it will be fun to watch Chin make his case. This is all in jest of course as Steve supports Chin all the way.
The conversation is interrupted when Steve’s phone rings. While Steve takes his call Chin meets everyone sitting with Kamekona where Hirsch is totally upset as all the banks turned him down even with Adam’s amazing redo of the presentation. There is a moment of silence and then Kamekona puts the money down in front of Hirsch telling him he has been asking all the wrong people and that he will invest in his business.
Hirsch is totally shocked and grateful but it was actually Adam’s presentation that made Kamekona decide it was a good investment. That is a happy ending for Hirsch and another Ohana moment as Hirsch has now been brought into the fold.
Steve then walks up and clearly is concerned. He calls for the team to step aside with him. He tells them the call was from Joe White (that is a name we have not heard in a while) as Steve had called him about their case to see if he could find out who was behind the recent terrorist attempt. It seems Joe found out that some of the guys were KGB mercenaries which is not total news but he also had sent Steve a photo of a man. Steve said that when he and Lou were at the mosque the same guy was there and in the picture he is standing on the steps of the US Capital. Joe has informed Steve that there are men in the US Government that are in on a domestic terrorist operation and that this was a first strike in a much bigger political agenda. They fear this was just the beginning of many more to come.
The final scene is another flashback of Steve with Salaam in the cell. Steve has brought him water. While sitting together, Salaam asks Steve what he’s doing. Steve tells him he is sitting with him as he thought he might like some company. In an emotional moment, Salaam tells Steve that he knows who he is and that a lot of men fear him but yet he is sitting there showing him kindness. He asks Steve why. Steve tells Salaam that they are both men who came into this world the same way and in situations like these it’s easy to forget that. Salaam tells Steve that he will never forget this and obviously he didn’t.
This episode was quite good. Although it was a little busy, once again the flashbacks were done well telling a needed part of a story. It had action, suspense, and even some comedy but what was the most moving were the scenes between Steve and Salaam. In these scenes both Alex and Omid Abhati who played Salaam were very good. It is always nice when Alex is given something more than the procedural to show character as only he can. The rating for this one is a 9.5.
That is another recap down with just one more to go. We know we say this often but it does seem as if the season just launched and we were covering the Sunset on The Beach event. Hopefully the hiatus will go by as fast. Check out some info on the season finale in the meantime.
